Care and maintenance

The life of wooden floor is at least 60 to 100 years, and in old palaces you can find parquet that is installed before centuries. Correctly using the hardwood or parquet floor it is necessary to recoat it on a regular basis each 6 to 8 years. You should not use the street footwear indoors, because the sand from the street acts as an abrasive. This means that the floor wears out very soon. You should not also use high heels, because such a footwear can damage the wooden floor. Under the furniture with casters e.g. office chairs you should use a special mat for hardwood floor protection. With the rest of the furniture you should use floor protective felt pads. At the entrance you should have a door mat which will collect most of the street dirt from your shoes.

Maintenance of oil-impregnated floors („TRIP TRAP”):

Everyday care

Before cleaning remove particularly difficult spots with intensive „Trip Trap” wood cleaner. Clean with 0,25 l cleaner mixed with 10 l water. Clean the floor and wait until it is dry. You will need 2 plastic buckets (about 10 l each), mop doodlebug, floor cloth or the like. In one bucket mix „Trip Trap Master Soap“ with 10 l water: for light color floors 0,25 ml of „white“ soap, for dark color floors 0,15 l of „natural“ soap. Remember! Shake the soap container well before use! Use the second bucket for clear water. Before proceeding with the next section of floor dip the mop in a clear water and rinse. This method helps you all the time use clean soap mix. Remember! Don’t use too wet mop for cleaning oiled floors! Excessive water can damage the wooden surface. If the floor is still wet after 5 min or so, try to gather the excessive water. Wait until the floor is completely dry after cleaning.

If you wish to revitalize the surface of an oiled floor, it’s recommended to clean it and maintain with buffing. You can use both manual and machine application. For this purpose use either „Maintenance Oil” or the same oil which is used for basic treatment of the floor. Oiled floors should be maintained regularly – normally once a year, but more often when it comes to floors exposed to extremely hard wear. Clean the floor with 125 ml „Wood Cleaner” mixed into 5 l water. Leave the floor to dry for at least 8 hours. The floor must be completely dry. Apply „Maintenance Oil” with a paint roller or cotton cloth and polish manually (fig. A) or use polishing machine (fig. B) for large surfaces (approx. 25 ml oil per 2 m²) and wait until the surface is hardened. For fig. B use white polishing discs. Wipe the floor with clean, dry cotton cloths. The floor should not appear wet and there should not be any excess oil left on the surface after polishing. When polished with polishing machine the floor will be pre-hardened after approx. 4 hours at 20° C and may cautiously be taken into use. Manually polished floors may be taken into use after 24 hours. If necessary to use the floor for traffic, cover it with cardboard. Remember! Don’t expose oil soaked clothes to fire! After the use put them into water or keep in closed metal container.

Maintenance of finished floors (LOBA):

For everyday care use a vacuum cleaner and wet cloth. Don’t mix the water with any available cleaning agent or powder – they can damage the finishing coat. SIA „Parketa Nams” recommends professional parquet cleaner „Loba Vollpflege”/ „FloorPolish“. „Vollpflege”/ „FloorPolish” is a mat synthetic care agent for finished parquet floors; the product has anti-slip properties according to DIN 18032. „Vollpflege”/„FloorPolish” creates a water-protective coat. With a soft, dry wool cloth or with an applicator apply the agent evenly on a clean, dry floor. The drying time is 20 – 30 minutes. Don’t use the floor during drying. For thorough cleaning the coverage rate of „Vollpflege” is approx. 1 l per 60 m². For the next cleanings mix 0,2 l „Vollpflege”/ „FloorPolish“ with 9 l water. Frequency of cleaning depends on the traffic. You should perform maintenance cleaning for floors with heavy traffic no less than 2 times per week, but for floors with moderate traffic 2 – 4 times per month.

Basic cleaning

„Vollpflege”/ „FloorPolish” creates a thin coat on the surface. To clean the surface completely you should use „Wachsentferner”(Vax Remover), according to the frequency and intensity of maintenance cleaning. You should perform basic cleaning only if the floor has lost its look or there is heavy soil or grime on the floor which cannot be removed by regular cleaning methods. Remember! Don’t use too wet cloth for cleaning! Excessive water can damage the wooden surface.

Special directions

According to the technical information you can use „Vollpflege”/ „FloorPolish” only 8 – 10 days after finishing.

Floors will last up to twice or three times longer if they are regularly cleaned and maintained.

Maintenance must be performed on a regular basis

If the surface is worn out it must be sanded and refinished.

Maintenance sanding and refinishing is also a part of floor care.
